Two success stories.
One future.

Both Burnus and Hychem were established in the 19th century in Darmstadt and Offenbach. Their products: Soap and candles. Today, they are united as one partner for professional laundries and represent a guarantee for a future with hygienic purity.

Burnus was established in 1836 and first operated as a soap and candle manufacturer. In 1907, owner and chemist Dr. Otto Röhm made a breakthrough with the invention of a new kind of laundry detergent based on enzymes, the first of its kind in the world. Burnus, named for the white attire worn in Arabic countries, is patented - and since then, has represented the highest standard in cleanliness and the latest innovations from research & development.

Hychem was also established in the late 19th century and was first known as the soap and candle-maker J.P. Haas. This company also makes consistent strides toward specialization. Its growth and development continues and the company's name is changed to Hychem AG. The takeover of Hychem by Burnus in 2005 results in the combined force of BurnusHychem GmbH.
And with it, a new outlook for professional cleanliness.

History Burnus

Burnus GmbH grew out of a soap and candle-making company originally founded by August Jacobi in 1836 as a small handicraft business in Darmstadt, and later developed into a soap manufacturer.

The chemist Dr. Otto Röhm heads the Röhm and Haas company, incorporating tannery chemicals in his work. In doing so, he is the first person to use enzymes extracted from beef stomachs. He takes up the idea from his wife who suggested that agents which dissolve fats from animal skins must also be suited for removing laundry stains.

Otto Röhm patents the first enzyme-based detergent and names it Burnus.

Röhm und Haas buys the Jacobi company and puts it in charge of Burnus sales. The company changes its name to Burnus.

Burnus is the most widely distributed detergent in Germany.

The global economic crisis takes its toll on August Jacobi AG as well. All poorly performing areas are sold off, company operations are reorganized and the business turns its full focus to the production of detergent under the Burnus brand.

August Jacobi AG changes its name to Burnus AG.

All of Burnus GmbH's production facilities are dismantled and removed by the Allied Forces.

In the course of reconstruction, Burnus products are manufactured at the Röhm GmbH plant in Worms. The product range is continually expanded over the following years: BURMAT is introduced as an all-purpose detergent, BURTI as a mild detergent for delicate fabrics, TUPPIX as a hand washing paste.

In addition, Burnus is engaged in the professional detergent sector and launches TEXASEPT as the first chemo-thermic disinfectant all-purpose detergent. Further developments and markets follow.

Burnus acquires the company Snoek in Worblingen, which manufactures body care products
under the brand GLYSOLID.

Burnus acquires the company Sodenta in Bad Soden with the brand AROSANA.

Röhm GmbH has meanwhile been acquired by the company now called EVONIK Industries. In the course of restructuring, Burnus GmbH is sold to a medium-sized family-owned company.

Burnus acquires the brands KAMILL, LITAMIN, CLIFF and CREDO from Procter & Gamble and distributes them from now on.

Burnus establishes foreign subsidiaries in Solothurn (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Warsaw (Poland). In the same year, the Swiss body care brand SIBONET is purchased from Henkel KGaA.

Establishment of a non-independent subsidiary in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

A subsidiary is established in Cremona (Italy).

A representative office for Burnus is established in Russia.
